Abstract
Met lit. opg. A brief overview on urban planning and the results in the cities. Attention is given to new planning instruments and the role of the arts and culture in cities. Whereas in the past it was stated that culture needed the city, it is now reversed: the city needs culture, it will provide a new and strong economic base and will contribute to an improvement in the prestige, the attractivity and the image of the city.
