Abstract
Study of the relation between manic-depressive illness and the artistic temperament enlarges our understanding of the creative process. A general overview of manic-depressive illness is given and also the biographical and scientific evidence for a relationship between manic-depressive illness and artistic creativity. The life of George Gordon, Lord Byron is examined to illustrate the complexity of overlap between heredity, individual will, circumstance and poetic temperament.
