Abstract
Met lit. opg.Met reg. The author tries to explain the underlying reasons for the often shocking reactions to contemporary art. He describes cases such as Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs and the rapsongs of 2 live crew. In his sociological explanation he gives attention to the relatively big number, the beliefs and aspirations of marginalized groups, such as women, gays and lesbiens, African-Americans and Hispanics. He pays attention to the situation in the USA, and surveys visual art, photography, and film, as well as artistic upstarts such as video and performance art.
