Concepts such as idealism, avant-garde, utopia, hope, commitment, sanctuary, involvement and autonomy are cropping up increasingly in the current discourse on art. These are terms that remind us of the modern past. But why the sudden reemployment of this vocabulary? To what extent can this be seen as a conscious reformulation? Is modernist thinking perhaps being applied strategically in order to restore the modern-day link with political ideals? Is it now down to avant-garde art to re-politicise the dehumanised public space? These are the questions that formed the starting point for a series of Tuesday evening discussions that took place at De Appel (Amsterdam), Spring 2005, under the title Modernity Today. The subject matter was treated from a different perspective every evening. Contributors: Jane & Louise Wilson, Patricia Pisters, Jos de Mul, John Körmeling, Mathieu Mercier, Sean Snyder, Dominic van den Boogerd, Liam Gillick. |
