Samenvatting
Case studies from four countries where national approaches to measuring cultural value are in various stages of development, show that local conditions and different motivational drivers have proved to be significant influences in the development of frameworks. But what is common to all of these approaches is the importance of the national stage as the platform on which the subject of cultural measurement is being discusses. Big questions are: what do we mean by culture? How do we describe cultural experiences? What difference does culture make to our national identity, economic productivity and the social health and the well-being of our nations? Contains: Leigh Tabrett, 'The development of cultural indicators for Australia – policy-making in a federal system of government'; Bev Hong, 'National cultural indicators in New Zealand'; Claire McCaughey, Nancy Duxbury and Adam Meisner, 'Measuring cultural value in Canada: From national commissions to a culture satellite account'; Geoffrey Crossick and Patrycja Kaszynska, 'Under construction: Towards a framework for cultural value'.
