Samenvatting
The environmental upheaval that the world is facing doesn't concern exclusively nature but poses a major existential threat to cultural heritage in all its expressions. A massive number of major archaeological, cultural, and natural heritage sites may be lost or damaged by the rise of sea level, extreme temperatures and catastrophic events. This White Paper covers five domains of research, policy and practice: a) Heritage analysis in recent reports delivered by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); b) Definition of risk terminologies in heritage, developed by UNESCO, ICOMOS, IUCN, ICOM, ICCROM and other culture and heritage-related organisations, with the IPCC as mean of cross-walk between the two fields; c) The elaboration of types and severity of impacts, vulnerability, and risks; d) An analysis of the geographic distribution of impacts, vulnerability and understanding risks; e) A compendium of existing tools for identification, monitoring, and comparison of the impacts, vulnerability, and understanding risks to heritage from climate change.
