An attempt to analyze the role of performers, and their socialization and recruitment into the occupations of dance, symphonic music, theater, and opera. Six sections can be distinguised. First, development of a sociological theory based on performance as an act of social communication. Secondly the attention is fixed on the micro-level: the performer. In the third section the macro- level: the management of the arts is discussed. The factors influencing the development of style is the subject in the next section, after which the audiences and critics are studied. The final section discusses the role of the patron of the arts throughout history. Each section includes an interview with a specialist on the subject. |
