Samenvatting
The USSR's Writers' Union, created in the 1930s by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, has ruled every aspect of Russian writers' personal and professional lives until Gorbachev. It was virtually impossible to work as a writer outside the Union's organization. The Union not only `guided' the writer in his or her adherence to the ever-changing Party line but it also acts as a writer's employer and benefactor, providing access to living space, cars, vacations, medical care, pensions, and prot ection against governmental or Party harassment. Attention is also given to the future of Russian literature in the wake of Glasnost.
