Samenvatting In times of conflict, buildings are inevitably damaged or destroyed. There has however always been another war against architecture: the deliberate destructions of the built artefacts of a people or a nation as an aspect of ethnic cleansing, of creating terror or of maintaining divisions. Examples are a.o. the destruction of the World Trade Centre in New York, of the National Library in Sarajevo, the Sovjet assault on religious architecture, the demolition of historic quarters of Bucharest by Ceaucescu, the Buddhas of Bamiyan, blown up by the Taliban and the Coalition's invasion of Iraq.
