Samenvatting Met lit. opg.Met reg. An analysis of the important and ambivalent terrain of American populism across a range of cultural forms, historical traditions, and political events. In the readings there is a stress on images of masculinity and femininity constructed by an `imaginary America', especially the links between gender and work in films about the family farm and in contemporary thrillers. The relationship between tradition and American music and literature is also discussed. The focus on the vitality and diversity of American cultural traditions leads into a topical argument against the rhetoric of the `Americanization' of British culture. |
