Samenvatting
Cultural classification systems by focusing on musical categories and hierarchies in the US, Germany, France and the Netherlands from 1955 to 2005. Based on analysis of elite newspaper coverage of music in each country, the findings show that popular music has attracted a great deal more attention and gained considerable cultural legitimacy in the four countries since 1955. Furthermore, the increasing cultural legitimacy of popular music is associated with greater segregation of male and female musical actors. Schmutz concludes that popular genres that receive the most media attention are more male-dominated than other popular genres and tend to become increasingly so over time.
