Samenvatting In September 2003 the London office of Arts Council England held its first conference since the restructuring of the national arts funding system. In her presentation, Sarah Weir, Executive Director for London, spoke of the need for 'imaginative audacity' in future approaches to the arts. Professor Richard Sennett, argued for a new approach to creative spaces. Vic Ecclestone offers his experiences on a Bristol housing estate, where economic and cultural deprivation go hand in hand. Sir Bob Scott relates the struggle to win popular support for Liverpool's bid for European Capital of Culture. Representatives from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Arts Council England and the Greater London Authority present their views on London's status as a world city and cultural powerhouse. They argue for a more confident advocacy for the arts, not just as an effective vehicle for other agendas, but for its intrinsic contribution to diversity, a healthier economy and fuller lives. |
