Samenvatting
The rationale for copyright law is that authors are uniquely responsible for their work, however, this a doubtful premise. Authors are better concieved of as social authors who work by recombining symbolic materials from a historically deposited common stock. Copying and adaptation of mediated music is an example of such a social authorship. A new public debate about the social nature of creativity and the desirability of curtailing rather then enlarging copyright is necessarry.
