Samenvatting
In Europe cultural affairs belong almost exclusively to the domain of the individual nation states. The study explores whether or not the governments of the 25 EU Member States would support a more enhanced integration of cultural components into the Union´s foreign policy and external relations with third countries, thus complementing the prevailing foreign cultural policies of the EU countries. It shows three key objectives of such a coordinated external cultural policy. First, it could help to create a strong, unified image of countries working together in an ambience of respect and cultural diversity. Second, a shared cultural policy could develop wider markets for Europe's vast cultural heritage and cultural industries. Last, it could reinforce a two-way approach to international cultural policy, based on acceptance of and a positive attitude to the multicultural nature of European societies. A common external cultural policy for Europe, could therefore contribute to mutual understanding and resolving conflicts. Country profiles with literature lists and websites.
