Samenvatting
The London 2012 Olympic Games marked exactly 100 years since the first official presentation of an Olympic cultural programme. Now known as the Cultural Olympiad, these programmes have evolved from being an obscure historical requirement by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) into ambitious programmes of activity for host nations, which are expected to expand the creative impact and legacy of their Games. Yet despite this transformation, the programme as a whole remains consistently overlooked in Games evaluation frameworks. This special edition of Cultural Trends looks into the experience of planning for, delivering and capturing the impacts of the London Cultural Olympiad. Its main focus is an interrogation of methodological challenges, as well as emerging evidence about the four-year cultural journey towards London 2012. The four articles discuss this topic from a diverse range of vantage points. They combine detailed assessment of specific aspects of the London Cultural Olympiad with overarching reflections on broad topics, such as: the meaning of Olympic legacy globally and how evidence baselines have developed in the UK (Scott); the meaning of cultural value (McGillivray & McPherson); the ambitions of the Olympic Movement and the role that culture is supposed to play in realising these ambitions (McGillivray & MacPherson; Reilly et al.); and the challenge of fitting a special event strategy within existing UK cultural policies (Gilmore).
