Samenvatting
A 'declaration on the importance and value of universal museums' was drafted in December 2002 and signed by 19 major museums from Europe and North America. Its publication gave rise to some debate on the restititution of works held in these collections which have been constituted over many centuries, as well as on the wider responsibilities of museums today. The declaration accompanied by several responses. Special issue contains: The Universal Museum: a Special Case?, by Geoffrey Lewis; Declaration on the Importance and Value of Universal Museums; The Treasures of World Culture in the Public Museum, by Peter-Klaus Schuster; The Declaration: A Contested Issue, by George Abungu; Assuming our Responsibilities in the Present, by Guido Gryseels; Universal Museums in Practice: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, by Betsy Ennis; The British Museum, by Neil MacGregor; The State Hermitage Museum.
