Article considers the role of the museum in urban culture as represented in travel guides, focussing in particular on the intermediary role of travel guides between the museum and its audience. Investigation of travel guides to Rotterdam, from the moment of the foundation of the municipal Boymans museum in 1849 until the move of the museum to a new building in 1935.
