Samenvatting
The rising costs of Austrian theatres as well as of those of other European countries are discussed and some people even predicted that in a few years time, it will no longer be possible to finance theatres. This perspective does not seem entirely improbable, as, in addition to the rising costs, subsidies are being reduced and theatres closed. Many of the reasons for this phenomenon are not necessarily to be found in the structure of the theatres themselves. As Schumpeter noted in 1918, a state's financial crisis frequently indicates political crisis and changes on the political level (Schumpeter, 1991/1918). |
