Samenvatting REAP conducted a comprehensive search for all studies from 1950-1999 (published and unpublished, in English) that have tested the claim that studying the arts leads to some form of academic improvement. There are three areas where reliable causal links were found: Listening to music and spatial-temporal reasoning; learning to play music and spatial reasoning and classroom drama and verbal skills. It is dangerous to justify arts education by secondary, non-arts effects. To appear in: The journal of aestetic education, University of Illinois press, volume 34, nos. 3/4, fall/winter 2000. |
