Secrets of the '90s

Naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Secrets of the Nineties, in het Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem kijkt conservator Mirjam Westen terug op haar beleving van de kunst in de negentiger jaren en bespreekt de werken die zij koos uit de collectie van het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam voor de tentoonstelling. Criticus Sven Lütticken spitst zich toe op het begrip 'engagement', dat nu misschien nog wel meer dan in de jaren '90 rondwaart in het kunstdiscours in Nederland. Camiel van Winkel overziet het decennium met een zekere scepsis, een scepsis die meer nog dan de kunst is ingegeven door de rol van de kunstkritiek in onderhavige periode. Daarnaast een gesprek over de jaren '90 met vijf mensen die vijftien jaar geleden nieuwkomers waren in de kunstwereld (Sven Lütticken, Barbara Visser, Leontine Coelewij, Jan Mot en Jeanne van Heeswijk).
The Museum for Modern Art in Arnhem organised an exhibition of works from the 1990s from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. In this bulletin curator Mirjam Western looks back on her experiences of the art in the 1990s and discusses works that she selected from the Stedelijk's collection. Critic Sven Lütticken focuses on the concept of 'engagement' (social commitment), which is now perhaps even more current in art discourse in The Netherlands than it was in the 1990s. Camiel van Winkel surveys the decade with a certain scepticism, which is prompted by the role of the art critic during the period in question more than by the art. In addition to the articles there is a conversation about the 1990s with five people who were newcomers in the art world fifteen years ago (Sven Lütticken, Barbara Visser, Leontine Coelewij, Jan Mot and Jeanne van Heeswijk).
