      Samenvatting
          Contribution to the current debate regarding the relationship between mass communication and cultural identity within the context of a changing notion of Europe. These developments can be analysed in terms of a particular repositioning of communication and information systems within the social, political and cultural constellation in which they operate. This repositioning has resulted in changes in the way existing mass media are able to articulate specific cultural identities or become a means of empowerment for a variety of social groups.
