Samenvatting
Met reg. Bibliografie : p. 283-302 The author traces in detail the relationship between contemporary politics, the commissions, and the strategies used to shape events of recent French history - the Great Revolution, the Empire, and the 1830 Revolution - into sophisticated visual supports of the present. He claims that the schism between theory and practice wrought by the pressures of government ideology and official patronage forced painters from the aesthetic reserve of tradition into the mainstream of popular culture.
